Billionaire Kitesurfers…March 6, 2008
People from all walks of life enjoy ‘taking the air’. Google founders Sergey Brin and Larry Page are avid kite-surfers. They search out interesting and remote sites to indulge their passion in this sport. When they want to really ‘fly high’ they head for Ittoqqortoormiit, Greenland. This is one of Greenland’s most remote areas and you ‘catch the wind’ amongst monster-sized icebergs which reach 15 stories high. In fact, Greenland was recently host to three billionaires. Bill Gates, too, did a little downtime at Apussuit Adventure Camp, a heli-skiing resort 15 miles outside Maniitsoq in West Greenland. (Jeryl Brunner and Rob Baedeker)
These remote northern islands are becoming more and more popular. Iceland, otherwise known as the land of ice and fire, has a rapidly increasing tourist business in extreme sports. They offer various adventure sports like swimming in the geothermal waters of the Blue Lagoon, whitewater rafting, mountain snowmobiling, dog sledding, skydiving (apparently Bjork skydived into one of her concerts!), kayaking, sledding and more. Not only can you get your adrenaline kick but you can wallow in the beautiful clean fresh air and witness the raging rivers, beautiful waterfalls, magnificent glaciers, spouting geysers, and beautiful landscape.
